Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre

One of the most visited tourist spots in Cambodia is Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre, a facility dedicated to butterflies. It is located in the town of Siem Reap and was founded in 2009. The centre is the largest enclosed butterfly centre in Southeast Asia. It is also known as the Angkor Butterfly Center. The butterfly sanctuary is designed and financed by Ben Hayes and Mike Baltzer, two British butterfly enthusiasts.
The best time to visit the center is November and December, as the number of butterflies and species is at its peak during the period. The center also doubles up as a sustainable butterfly farm, where the local people are provided with training. These farmed butterflies are also sold and exported. Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre also supplies butterflies for live exhibitions domestically and abroad. The farm is in close vicinity to natural forests and offers the local people a livelihood.
The center features a large netted enclosure where a large number of butterflies are kept in free-flying zone. You also get to see butterflies in their pupae stage. While the center has a large number of species at the display, the most prominent types are dark blue tiger, atlas moth and great Mormon. Other interesting varieties include the red Helen, orange emigrant and five barred swordtail.
The center is located nearly three kilometers away from the Landmine Museum and is on the way to Banteay Srey Temple so you may want to include them in your itinerary.
