Siem Reap Natural Attractions Phnom Bakheng

Bakheng is Hindu-Buddhist temple built in traditional mountain temple style. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been built in the 9th century under the reign of King Yasovarman. It is located on the top of a hill which offers an excellent view of a spectacular sunrise and stunning sunset. The temple is currently covered under a conservation plan run by the World Monuments Fund in collaboration with APSARA. The temple was originally a Hindu temple which was converted to Buddhist site at a later date. It housed two Buddha statues, which do not exist in the current time.
Bakheng Hill entails a steep climb through a path with some steps from the east side of the temple. From the top, you can see the five towers of Angkor Wat in the west while Phnom Bok in the northeast can be witnessed. Similarly, on the east side you can see Phnom Kulen and on the southwest side, you can witness Phnom Krom. The hilltop offers you a grand view as well as the solitude. The temple is the symbolic representation of Mount Meru. The temple has pyramid shape with seven levels, which represent seven heavens. The temple has five sandstone sanctuaries on the top level. The lower four levels have one hundred and four smaller towers scattered through them. However, these towers are placed in such a way that only 33 towers are visible from the center of any side. The number 33 is represents the number of gods living on Mount Meru.
