East Mebon

East Mebon was built in the 10th century by King Rajendravarman and is situated on an island in Eastern Baray. It is built in a mountain temple style, in line with other monuments in the area. However, the temple of East Mebon is only accessible via boat. It is believed that the temple was built by the king in honor of his parents. The temple of East Mebon has three levels and five towers adorning it. The lowest tier is flanked by the statues of the elephants on each corner. There are two meter high stone elephants which are free standing. These elephant statues are carved out of a single block of stone. The temple is very close to the temple of Pre Rup in its design and style. The main materials used for the construction were sandstone, laterite, stucco and brick. The towers are made out of brick.
From the top, you can have an excellent view of the now-dry lake and the surroundings, offering a surreal experience. The temple is located on a north-south axis with Pre Rup, the state temple of Rajendravarman. East Mebon is home to a large number of sculptures which are varied in their style. Apart from impressive elephant sculptures, there is also an Indra statute sitting atop his three headed elephant named Airavata. There are other sculptures depicting Shiva on his mount of the sacred bull Nandi. While at the temple, you ought to also take time to appreciate the elegant carvings on the lintels.
