Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat is one of the seven modern wonders of the world. Situated nearly 6km north of Siem Reap, the huge complex was constructed in the 1100s and thought to have taken 30 years to finish. The temple is a sign of dedication to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is the biggest memorial of the Angkor group. Some believe that it was purposed as a burial temple for King Suryavarman II. The structure is 213 meters in height and spread over three levels, with each one being taller in height yet smaller in size than the level below. The overall shape of the complex looks like a lotus bud. Some consider the wat to be a microcosm of the universe constructed from stone. The wat is spread over 500 acres of land.
You can access the wat through the entrance on the west side which is lined by lions made of stone. The temple combines two different Khmer temple architectural styles of Temple Mountain and galleried temple. The complex also represents Mount Meru, which is believed to be the abode of gods in Hindu mythology. However, unlike most of the temples belonging to Khmer traditions, Angkor Wat is oriented towards the west direction rather than the east direction. The temple was built using smooth stones which were laid without mortar. The blocks of stones are held together by very tight joints. It is made of 5 to 10 mill sandstone blocks. There are bas reliefs and carvings on most of the surfaces including many of the roofs.
