Bayon Temple
One of the most iconic monuments in Cambodia, Bayon Temple is located in the city of Angkor Thom. The tower of the Bayon is accessible through the east entrance. The temple is exactly in the middle of Angkor Thom. Unlike most temples, Bayon does not have any moat or wall around it. It is also the last mountain temple to be built in Khmer style. The temple is believed to be built on the top of another older monument. The temple features 54 towers which are representative of Khmer Empire periods. The main tower is known as the Gold Tower and is located in the center, depicting four faces. The central tower was originally designed in cruciform shape. However, later it was turned into circular form.
There had been considerable confusion over the depiction of the faces. While some historians think that the faces represent King Jayavarman VII, others are of the opinion that Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara-Lokeshvara is represented through the carved faces. The main temple mountain is flanked by two galleries. These galleries are home to a large number of bas-relief scenes depicting historic events. The outer gallery is believed to have over 11,000 carved figures. The gates are also adorned with various sculptures related to the fable of Churning of the milk ocean.
You ought to also pay attention to the decorations found on the pillars standing in front of the entry tower at the east. The theme of these decorations includes dancing Apsaras in different poses.
