Banteay Srei
Banteay Srei is a 10th century temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. The temple is located near the hill of Phnom Dei, 25 kilometer to the main group of temples. The temple has a unique look with its red sandstone construction. It also features elaborate carvings on the walls. It also has the distinction of being the only major Angkor temple not built by a monarch. The temple was built by the courtiers Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha. While the temple underwent several extensions and additions during 11th to 14th century, it was rediscovered in 1914. The temple is mainly celebrated for its aesthetics and carvings. It makes minimal use of laterite and bricks, which were employed only for enclosure walls and some other structural elements. The temple also has relatively large pediment. The temple is accessible through its east entrance.
Among the various motifs adorning the structures of Banteay Srei are Kala, devata and the false door. The site consists of three concentric rectangular enclosures. These enclosures are connected through a causeway. It also has two libraries which are made from sandstone, brick and laterite. Each library has two pediments.
The entrance fee for Banteay Srei is included in the ticket price for Angkor. There is also a small reservoir behind the temple, where you can enjoy a local boat trip through the small lake.
